Pensacola - Habitat for Humanity

Day 4:

Before even waking for our second day on our building site everyone but a lucky few heavy sleepers were rudely awakened MULTIPLE times by Josh’s abnormal and obnoxious snoring. That was not so neat. Aside from the lack of sleep everyone was very eager to get back to the site and start on the fresh slab of concrete.

As soon as we arrived on site we all finished up our projects from the day before or got new assignments on the bare slab. As usual (Lil) Wayne was very supportive and patient as we learned how to construct the frame of the house. By lunch time we already had two walls standing and another almost ready to be hoisted up. Fortunately, Bridget was not disturbed by Spot (the cute stray dog) who we fed the day before. After lunch we continued working on the structure of the house while also taking really neat time-lapsed videos of our progress. By the end of the day we had finished the whole outer frame of the house with only one injured wrist and a hand full of crushed fingers. Before leaving, Cara was ecstatic to take a picture of the four epic joutfits (joutfit definition: noun; outfit/ ensemble made entirely out of denim) worn on site by our team members. (Cara was also dismayed at the beginning of the day because the other eight of us wanted nothing to do with the theme.)

For the first time this week we had a totally free afternoon after working with habitat all day. Some of us chose to take a walk and explore the surroundings of the church while others decided to bathe. While on the walk our service changed from helping people find a home to helping a dog out of a thorn bush. The group walking tried coxing the Chihuahua-looking-thing out of the bush and into loving arms for over thirty minutes. Just as we were about to give up, the pastor from the church we are staying at was driving past and sticking his head out the window looking very confused. Luckily he was able to free the pup and he/she went on their merry way back into the woods. We were then given a ride back to the church where we were greeted by 50+ members, and a delicious dinner cooked by our homie Dave.

The cheesy chicken casserole was super neat, and we spent our dinner conversing with a few of the members. One of these members included Doctor John, who is having his 97th birthday this Sunday. John loved talking about his Florida Gators and his 7 kids, but truthfully he just wanted to talk to all the “pretty ladies” (mainly Allie). Meanwhile, Josh was meeting half the population of his hometown, Cape Girardeau.

As much as we have loved keeping y’all updated we just witnessed Cara fling her body onto a table to acquire a spoon (in the game of spoons, go figure). So we best be going!

So long, fair well from

Carly and Delaney
