Moore--Disaster Relief

Day 4-

It was a beautiful day in Oklahoma today! Short sleeves were a must in this 60 degree, sunny weather. Per usual, we worked in our two teams for the first half of the day.

The first team completed the ramp today!!! It looks absolutely wonderful. For being  a bunch of amateurs, we really pulled through here. Since our homeowner’s surgery is coming up soon, we decided to buy a card and flowers for her and an OSU hat for her husband.

The second team returned to our new friend’s home to complete her move to a senior living facility. We cleaned the majority of the house and moved a few more things around. However, there were some complications and miscommunications between the senior community, and her new house was not ready yet. So, we had to unpack a few of her necessities so she could continue to stay in her current home until further notice. It was sad not being able to complete that particular project and heartbreaking to have to leave our friend in such a frustrating situation.

After a lunch break, our group reunited and teamed up with another school from New York to work on a massive project at a mobile home compound. The area had been hit by a tornado last year and the damage had worsened over the past few months with ice storms and other winter weather. There were downed trees, broken fences, and a dilapidated shed that had been moved from one part of the field to another during the tornado. The area was even complete with a trampoline suspended 25 feet up in a tree, thanks to the high winds. Our teams worked to collapse the shed, remove the downed fencing, and relocate all of the tree wood to the curb to be picked up by city. While there is still so much that needs to be done in this area, we are happy with our progress today and look forward to others coming in to continue that task.

Our lovely family member, Brady, prepared a dinner straight out of a five-star restaurant for us tonight. Chicken wraps and almond green beans! We topped that off by trying a local favorite dessert, Braum’s ice cream. This evening’s party continued with some kickball and knockout in our church’s gymnasium where we embraced our inner athlete and soon realized an MAB intermural team is a must upon our return to Mizzou!

We are excited for our assignment at a food resource center tomorrow and are pumped to experience and share even MOORE love with the Oklahoma community.

Rest easy,

MAB Moore
