Moore--Disaster Relief

We made it to Moore!

Our group arrived in Moore, Oklahoma on Saturday night and enjoyed a free day before we started service on Sunday. Moore is a suburb of Oklahoma City so we spent our Sunday in the city. We started our day visiting the Myriad Botanical Gardens, which is a tropical botanical garden. Our whole group loved this because it was so cold outside, but so warm in the gardens and almost made it feel like summer. After the gardens, we had lunch at an awesome burger joint called S & B's Burgers. To finish the day in OKC, we spent almost 4 hours at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. This place was unbelievable! The whole group loved learning about the bombing in 1995 and had lots of discussion on it the rest of the day. Grocery shopping was a must and we had taco night for the first night! We have some good cooks in our group

Today was our first day of service! While here in Oklahoma, we are volunteering for an organization called Serve Moore. Moore was hit by a catastrophic tornado in 2013. Since then, the same area has experienced three more tornadoes, ice storms and flooding. Although we are here to serve on behalf of disaster relief, we have quickly learned that the Serve Moore is much more that just an organization to help out during large disasters. They are there for really anything you need. "Renew homes, renew lives" is what they told us at our orientation this morning and we loved that philosophy! Anyway to serve the community is what we are here for.

Our group was split into two groups today. One group spent time at a home where a small F0 tornado (strong winds) damaged a part of her house which caused a leaking in the ceiling of a bedroom and needed new flooring in the make-shift garage. We did not install the flooring in her garage but we did help her organize some shelving in the newly tiled room and completely replaced the dry wall in the ceiling of the bedroom. This was quite the experience for all of us and we learned a lot! If you need someone to fix your dry wall, just give us a call!

The other part of our group spent the day working at a home installing a wheel chair accessible ramp for a woman who is about to undergo surgery to remove her foot from complications of diabetes. This was a very rewarding project for the group because, they didn't have much training on how to build the ramp but worked together through trial and error and also knew how much the project would be appreciated. After trying a bunch of different methods, they figured out the best way to build the ramp and are halfway done! They cannot wait to finish tomorrow.

Both groups had a fun day getting to talk with the families and learning about the construction skills we didn't even know we had. Tomorrow we are back to Serve Moore to partake in more volunteering! Tonight, we are playing Aggravation (the group's new found love) and Phase 10 after have grilled cheese and soup for dinner. Hope all of our family and friends are having a great start to their week.

Check in tomorrow for MOORE updates, get it?

Sincerely,

MAB Moore
