Memphis 1- Day 1, Getting to Memphis

Memphis 1- Day 1, Getting to Memphis

We finally made it to Memphis! After our trip was postponed [thanks to Kenny and the snow], we hit the road at 1:30 p.m. and arrived in Memphis at 9 p.m. after a couple stops along the way to pick up some fellow participants and for some food and gas. Thankfully, having the trip postponed meant we missed driving in most of the bad weather, but Tennessee still welcomed us with rain. For the most part, the drive was pretty uneventful until we arrived in Memphis and couldn't find the church where we were staying. Turns out the town we're staying in, Germantown, has a ton of churches, so we did a lot of pulling into parking lots and turning around, but finally, we made it.

We unloaded our cars, found the room we were staying in and were pleasantly surprised. Our room is huge, complete with six couches, tons of floor space and a t.v., but the only movie we could find is The Chronicles of Narnia. We may or may not be hunting down the nearest Red Box later in the week. After settling in, we decided we were hungry so we packed ourselves back into the vans and pulled into the nearest Domino's. Turns out, drive thrus at pizza places do exist, so that was our first big adventure. Between the time we ordered our pizza and when we picked it up, we took a detour to Wal-Mart because you can't have pizza without soda.  The quick trip ended up taking us forever because we are the most indecisive group, and it took us 20 minutes to pick out liters of Diet Coke, Sprite and Hawaiian Punch. We're going to work on our group decision-making skills this week. We promise.

Finally, we picked up our pizzas and headed back to our home away from home.

In the middle of devouring our much-awaited pizzas we heard a loud "hello" come from the hallway and met the church security guards. We don't know why there are security guards, and we don't know their names, but they showed us where the kitchen is, so we'll consider them our friends.

Currently, everyone is getting ready for bed after a long day of traveling, but we're so excited for the rest of the week! We can't wait to start doing service with St. Jude's Research Hospital and Buckman and Oakhaven Boys and Girls Club.

Tomorrow is our free day, so we'll be exploring Memphis starting with a visit to the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks. Pictures to come, don't worry.

Oh, and P.S. On our way to Memphis, Car #1 had decided that every member on our trip was going to buy a Powerball ticket and if one of us won, we would share with everyone else, so maybe one of us will come home a billionaire or close to it and all of us will come home richer, both emotionally and physically. Anything can happen on an MAB trip.
