Charleston, SC - Children

After a long two day car ride, MAB has finally made it to Charleston! Today, we served at LowCountry Orphan Relief (LOR), sorting clothes for abused and neglected children. When we weren't sorting clothes, we helped by packing toiletries, putting together outfits, and sorting through clothes. MAB enjoyed helping LOR with these tasks as well as learning more from the steady volunteers that work at LOR daily. We learned that this past year, LOR helped provide over 30,000 kids with clothes, toiletries, clothes, and more.

MAB also took a tour of Water Missions International (WMI) and learned a lot about their efforts in building safe water solutions for other countries. WMI serves 8 different countries specifically by educating them about simple clean drinking and sanitation. It was shocking to learn that majority of the people in these countries don't know the difference between clean drinking water and contaminated or polluted water. These children constantly get sick because of their lack of clean water and poor immune systems. Many miss school because they are so sick from drinking this water. Aside from this, WMI has also built latrines near schools so children are able to go to the bathroom easily and comfortably. WMI has recently changed their name to water mission and has helped provide clean drinking water for over 3 million people to this day.

On Tuesday, MAB went to LOR again to help with some other tasks. Today, we helped package socks, put together clothing orders for children, and helped with the holiday decorations. These simple tasks that we do really emphasizes one of our MAB principles, poco a poco. We may not always be able to help with huge tasks and we may not be there for more than a week, but we serve in full effort to do what we can with what we are given and the time that we have. We hope to make a positive impact and change with any amount of service that MAB can give. We may not see these tasks helping these abused and neglected children first hand, but we know that our efforts are what are helping these children in the long run.

Throughout this time at LOR, we have really learned more about the community and the organization as a whole. We are so fortunate to have spent time working with this organization. Adding to that, all of our MAB participants voluntarily signed a petition going around rejecting the right for the government to run a railroad in between the LOR building. With the relocation of this building, LOR may lose many valuable donations and/or children coming to pick up clothes that are in need. I think it was really cool that after two days of serving with this organization, every student was in favor of signing this petition.

At Water Mission, we helped with tasks like painting walls and floors, packaging, landscape work, and more. We are so excited to serve Water Mission tomorrow and we are looking forward to the rest of the week!

"It really hit home when I filled an order for an 11 year old girl who came to LOR in need of clothes. I loved being able to help package this order and truly make an impact on this child" -Stefani Simms

"I thought it was awesome that Water Mission uses solar panels to power their customized solutions for clean drinking water as well as educate the people that they serve." -Zach Nichols
