Santa Fe - Habitat (1)

Welcome to the #1 Santa Fe Blog in all of MAB. We know you're here to see all of the great work we will do this week but first, we had to drive there. These 12 devilishly good looking, high achieving students departed from Columbia, Friday afternoon in our two mini vans towards our midway (one-third of the way) housing in Wichita, Kansas. We casually noticed that nobody listens to Smokey the Bear as there were many small forest fires as we drove through Kansas. Our first family dinner lead to quite the experience. After some early troubles, Alex was able to work it out with the manager of Wendy's and they gave us extra sandwiches (fo free). Back on the road again, we drove our last couple hours and finally arrived at Wichita even after Lena nearly ran over a possum.

As we got to our "midway" housing, we saw Mitch Adams standing there open-armed with his dogs ushering us through the driveway (Lena almost ran over Tessa, but she's okay still). We unpacked for the night and had tons of fun with Augie and Tessa. Augie kept hounding us for ice cubes and we were very happy to oblige. We found out about Ali's fear of dogs and Evan's apparently tasty shoes but all in all the Adams family is always a good time. Before we were leaving we heard the story of Corky Knock, a Mizzou alum from the Tornado Alley Tigers (Wichita's alumni chapter). He recently passed away but was also a marine who served our nation with pride for many years. In order to honor him, the Tornado Alley Tigers have a Mizzou flag that is always kept high on his behalf and our trip has the privilege of bringing that flag with us all week. We hope to take all kinds of great pictures with it all over Santa Fe honoring his memory.

We would like you to get to know a little about us before we start serving our community so here we go:

Emmitt: "Emmitt Wright is a junior psychology major. He is most excited about the culture of Santa Fe, especially the relationship between the locals and nature. In his free time he enjoys playing in his band, The Rollups (therollupsband.com), long walks on the beach, long beaches without walks, and citrus scented air fresheners. This message sponsored by the word 'dude.'"

Alex: Hi Mom and Dad and everyone else's families reading this. I'm a senior studying finance with less than two months away from having a piece of paper that means my last four years meant something. That has to be important, right? I'm excited that somehow Mizzou thought letting me and Emmitt drive 10 other students multiple states away was a good idea. Also the whole habitat thing and mountains are pretty swell.

Evan: I am a senior mechanical engineering major.  I'm excited to meet the family we are serving this week.  I am also pumped to get my hands on some power tools and building some stuff!!!

Kate:  Hi guys!  I'm Kate and fun fact, was the only eligible driver who didn't have to drive on the way down here (which means I must be doing something right) so I got to enjoy all the beautiful scenery!  I'm a senior studying Accountancy.  I am so excited to see what all this week will bring and getting to make 11 new friends in the process!

Laura: Hello everyone! I am a freshman secondary social studies education major with a minor in Spanish. I'm really excited to be able to use my Spanish on this trip and to learn more about the culture while I am down here. Before this trip I had never went farther west than Kansas City so seeing actual mountains is pretty neat! I can't wait to try to climb one and see the beautiful sunsets!

Lena: Hey y'all! I'm Lena and I have a loud mouth…I know what you're thinking, "She can't be THAT loud." Well ask my fellow trip participants, they will likely confirm this.  I'm a junior studying  Business with an emphasis in Management and a minor in Entrepreneurship.  Fun fact: I was adopted when I was three months old from South Korea, thanks Mom and Dad!! I love to laugh and I'm beyond excited to spend a week with complete strangers.

Ali: Hi everyone! I have already achieved day 1 twitter fame with my backseat babe, Ellie.  I'm a junior studying  Bioengineering and this is my second Habitat trip. I am excited to be in a new state with 11 new friends! Can't wait to use the saw and nail gun, while laughing for hours!

Carly: Howdy! I'm a sophomore Strategic Communication major with a business minor from Dallas, Texas… I don't actually say howdy I just thought I would feed into the Texan stereotype (best country in the world btw). Random fact, I have an identical twin sister named Kelly and I absolutely love queso. I'm excited to work with Habitat for the first time and meet the awesome family we'll be working with!

Erin: Hi all! I'm Erin the crazy cat lady from Chicago (Ok I lied. I'm really from the suburbs). I'm currently double majoring in Strategic Communication and Spanish so I am super excited to experience the Spanish culture and language! I can't wait to impress everyone with my nail gun skills and spend a week with these awesome human beings!

Hannah: Hey, I'm Hannah a photojournalism major at Mizzou. One of my favorite things to do is make people laugh and genuinely feel in general which I enjoy using my photos to convey. I am excited for all the things there are to learn on this trip, not just by volunteering, but by spending time with such a close group and exploring a part of the US I've never been in before.

Ellie: Hey peeps! I'm Ellie aka Smellie and I am a sophomore nursing major from KCMO (go royals). This trip has already been so awesome, especially when Ali and I achieved twitter fame by making it onto MAB's twitter page (autographs and a memoir to come) and I can't wait to see what the rest of the trip holds! I am so excited to explore Santa Fe, work with Habitat, and bond with these 11 awesome people I'm with!!!!

Maryanne: Hi everyone (Mom and Mum-Mum)!! I'm a sophomore from St. Louis and I recently drove four hours in a minivan on a two-lane highway in Kansas so I'm feeling on top of the world. I can't wait for this week outside of my area code and comfort zone. I'm so excited to get started on the Habitat site and spend some time in the Santa Fe sun getting some sun(burn) with the Habitat family and my 11 new roomies.
