Alamosa - Habitat (2)

Day #2

It's been an entire 48 hours spent with these fools, and if the three of us aren't ducking out yet, we are in it for the long haul. It seems mildly impossible to cram 16 hours of excitement into one blog post, but we are sure going to try.

A small and strong group woke up an hour earlier than the rest to grab groceries for breakfast… which are actually almost gone now.  The rest of us hid away in our bunks catching up on the hours we lost from our drive.  I (Summer) stumbled out of bed at 9 am, then proceeded to run into Rhonda, our Habitat for Humanity coordinator. Quite literally, I ran into her. So that was a great start to a beautiful relationship.

Once we all dragged ourselves out of bed, we walked downstairs at the sound of our group arriving with food. Once we were all sat down to eat, we were greeted with an array of interesting people… the local Unitarian Church goers of Alamosa. Judy and Rainbow will now forever hold a place in our hearts as a pair of vibrant locals with hilarious personalities. We even saw someone do the"hang-loose" sign, which made us all laugh.

After the church service we met up with the gang in the church's nursery, which we were supposed to paint for our first day of service. Once the toys and furniture were cleared out of the room, we suited up and began to paint the robing's egg blue. Alyssa (aka our dedicated DJ) made a stellar playlist that kept us up to beat before we took our lunch break  (at  two o'clock) outside to enjoy the wonderful weather.

We ventured out to the front of the church and preceded to sit in a pile of rabbit poop, which Alyssa swore up and down was dirt. Okay, Alyssa, okay. After we sat around soaking in the sun, we all turn around and Alyssa is doing a headstand (or yoga, or yogs as she says). Of course, Joe can't sit around and watch someone do a headstand, so he joins in. He even showed us all a new technique that involved a little break dancing on the way down. Pretty soon Alyssa and Joe has half the group joining in. Side note: the three of us were happily standing on the sidewalk capturing the yoga poses on camera.

After lunch we finished the painting of the nursery, while Joe asked us very specific questions about our favorite foods. Goooooood times. Thanks to Alyssa's rockin' playlist, we were vibin' all the while, particularly whenever Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer came on.  Let's be honest, who can resist a sing-a-long with that playing?

It was around 5:30 pm whenever we finished. plenty of time for a hike, am I right?! Well after we decided that it might be too late for a hike, we decided it would be good to go to a wild life refuge.  After driving for twenty minutes, we turned into a dirt road….literally. When in Colorado go off roading in a 12-passenger van. I (Annie) have never held onto a wheel so tight (Jesus take the wheel).  As we approached the gate Sara and I feared that the fence would not open but luckily our fearless leader hopped out of the car to open the main road (YAYA).  We stopped to take in the beautiful scenery, and yes we attempted to take jumping pictures. A-ARON REFUSED to take a jumping picture so he climbed in the van and let the girls do what we did best and took beautiful (JK HILARIOUS) karate kicking picture. Check them out. Mallory is looking straight up gangsta. #thuggin  Gangster… weird creature… either way it was "derpy".

After we returned to our home at the church, we all decided it would be a good time to engage in some riveting card games. Once we got tired of Shannon winning, we decided it would probably be time to start dinner. With Annie and Sara in the kitchen, the rest of us were left to figure out something to do. Naturally, we decided to do some yogs (formally known as yoga). With Alyssa as our instructor, we were feeling some type of way, aka in serious pain as our muscles stretched like never before. After a kick in the head from Mallory, I (Summer) was laughing more than I assume the normal person laughs during a yogs sesh. Basically, we all became one with the church floor as Skinny Love played in the background and we all relaxed in savasana position, which is basically us collapsing on the floor.

After dinner, we all decided that we wouldn't be able to stop eating without something sweet.. which led us to remember the Nestle Toll House shop down the street. We quickly looked up the closing time, which turned out to be 9 pm. With the clock, not our phones… because we unplug, reading 8:50, we decided to make a run for it. We all threw on our shoes, grabbed our wallets and took off running down the streets of downtown Alamosa. You think I'm kidding? No. We actually ran. The delicious cookies were well deserved.

Basically, what we have learned after one full day in this beautiful place: We love Alamosa, and we think the feeling is mutual.

Stay tuned to see what shenanigans we will undoubtedly get into during the coming week!

Until next time,

Summer, Annie and Mallory (or Ally, as Joe would say)
