We started out the day bright and early, excited to take on Manhattan! We were in our cars by 8am and were walking in lower Manhattan by 8:45am. Only after parking in a sketchy parking garage that we struggled to navigate to. After pretending to be locals and grabbing coffee at a local shop, the first sites we saw were Ground Zero and the Freedom Tower.
We then headed to the Statue of Liberty and a couple group members grabbed hot dogs (at 10:45am) and almost were attacked by seagulls. We saw the bull, Wall Street, and the New York Stock Exchange after that. Next, we successfully navigated the subway and got off at Grand Central Station where we saw this AWESOME flash mob (JK, it was super uneventful). Then we walked to Times Square where a couple group members were kissed by Spiderman, took jumping pictures, and made friends with NYPD.
After that, we walked to Rockefeller Plaza and had lunch at Bill's Burgers inside the center. We managed to squeeze in 45 minutes of shopping and after all that shopping, we channeled our inner Serena Van Der Woodson and headed to Central Park to do some people watching on a big rock.
Still feeling in the Gossip Girl spirit, we walked to Ladurée and had delicious macaroons. Some of our favorites picks were pistachio, vanilla, violet, and caramel. If you're headed this way anytime soon, we recommend you avoid the Marie Antoinette (it tasted like dirt from my grandma's garden). We headed back to the subway and made our way to the Brooklyn Bridge and walked far enough to get some good pictures.
After grabbing a selfie stick from the tourist shops, we were off to dinner at Lombardi's. Lombardi's was recommended by one of our members' friends (thanks Mr. Mann!!) and is the first pizza place in the US. We ordered four pizzas and finished every bite.
We hiked back to the sketchy parking garage to retrieve our cars and head home. While we contemplated taking the subway back instead of walking, we took the motto of the day again and said "what's walking another 1.8 miles?" We ended our day with 15 miles walked, which accounts to over 2.5 hours of walking. The dogs are howling, but we will be up early tomorrow to start our week of service!
