Today was our first day of service! We had a FANTASTIC time serving at Nebraska Wildlife Rehab, Inc., and we were thrilled to get the chance to interact with actual animals. This property had been severely damaged by flooding in September, and had only been able to access the resources to begin repairs in January. Our team split up: half of us went outside to hose down and sanitize hundreds of cage and kennel parts, and half of us went inside to clean and organize the office and clinic spaces.
After about three hours of dusting, vacuuming, bleaching, and getting some ridiculous sunburns, our host rewarded us with a treat….a feast of Panera sandwiches salads, and cookies!
The joy did not end there, though: the Omahomies were delighted to meet some new friends: Jerome, Archie, and Stewart were three adorable baby squirrels that had recently been rescued and brought to a volunteer at the shelter. Seeing their tiny, furry tails brought us face to face with the spirit of our trip: doing whatever we can to help people preserve and protect animals.
We had a glorious day of volunteering, we had a delicious meal in downtown Omaha, then headed home to hit the showers and rest up for our first day at Hearts United Animal Shelter.
We can’t wait to meet our puppy friends…until then, we’re having a great time bonding and reminiscing about fluffy newborn squirrels! M-I-Z!
