Hey readers! We had a fantastic day today at Good Food for Good People, an organization that encourages people to increase their fruit and vegetable intake (and overall nutrition quality) with locally grown produce. We started the day with a Ted talk; the main take away from the talk was that we are all able to make a difference in the world if we use our abilities to accomplish the mission at hand. We then split into three groups: one group went to a local hospital and sold fruits and vegetables, one group went to a senior activity center to also sell the produce, and the third group stayed at the main facility and helped prepare lunch with the organization's founder Sean.
The group at the hospital was very inspired to see the impact Good Food for Good People has made on the patients and staff. We could see the excitement on many of their faces when they saw our mini farmers' market. Many doctors stopped and talked to our group and one in particular told us about all of his favorite Nashville sites and restaurants.
The group at the senior center participated in yoga with some of the residents, including laughing yoga! They had a great time talking to many of the senior citizens as they shared their insight and wisdom with the group. After a few hours we all headed back to the main site and ate a delicious meal made by Hannah and Adee with the help of Sean. The meal consisted of blue Hubbard squash and curry squash, red and golden beets, orange lentils, arugula salad with avocados, tomatoes, roasted squash seeds, and homemade vinegar dressing, and beef and pork sausage meatballs with mushrooms and sage. The mutual consensus was that the greatest part of the day was the staff at Good Food for Good People. Each staff member took time to get to know each of us. They genuinely cared about our interests and career paths and goals. All of us left with an amazing feeling of positivity and optimism. The staff's passion for the job they are doing is apparent and inspiring. Not all the staff members are Nashville natives, and most of them did not ever plan to have a job in health and nutrition. However, this organization has brought them together to build towards a common goal. Each individual brings a unique aspect to the job and together they have achieved an epic win!
After leaving Good Food for Good People, we headed to Opry Mills Mall to do a little shopping…well the girls did, at least! We ended the day with a reflection and a dinner consisting of quesadillas and tater tot casserole.
Today was undeniably inspiring! Each of us took something different away from the experience, but we all found profound meaning in the day's work, both with the community and the interactions with the extraordinary staff.
Signing off!
Emma and Charis
