Corpus Christi-Habitat for Humanity

Monday, January 12

Today was our second day working on site for Habitat for Humanity. Our group was separated into several teams, with various responsibilities. The house we were working on was one of two sites that is in the process of being built. Team members worked under the guidance of Mark, one of the coordinators for Corpus Christi’s Habitat. Several other volunteers worked with our team as well, except for they were known as caravaners. These caravaners travel across the country in mobile homes or RV’s and volunteer for multiple build sites. The caravaners we met were named Maria and Bob. Members of our team, Ethan, Chad and Steven worked on the roof  and put in both rafters and support beams. Jackson, Katie, Laura and Maggie worked on the edges of the roof, cutting and extending the pieces in preperation for the gutter board. Shelby, Carleigh and Sarah secured support straps on the rafters for extra security against wind and harsh weather. We can already tell that the relationships we are forming with other volunteers are both rewarding and beneficial. During our reflections, we talked about how Habitat is really teaching us the important of community and how to care for a stranger. Unfortunately, the day was colder than anticipated, so we are crossing our fingers for sunny skies as the week goes on !
