Jacksonville, FL - Animals (Post 6)

The Final Day of Service in Jacksonville

Like yesterday, we spent the day serving the wonderful animals at the Jacksonville Humane Society. After yesterday’s experiences, we were more than prepared to dive straight into our service priorities. We split into three different groups. Allie, Carlie, Mackenzie, and Alex went straight to begin walking dogs. Hai, Taylor, Matt, Karen, and Natasha began working on filling dog kongs. The injured and frail (Baylee, Maria, and Sijie) began working with the puppies.

We finished faster than the organization expected and were told to take the day off early! We headed back to the church to clean up after which we decided to part ways amicably for our recreational adventures. Group Amazing headed toward St. John’s Town Center (to shop and play Wizard’s Chess) and Group Mosquito Swarm #Karen headed to Little Talbot Island to enjoy nature.

Group Amazing (Hai, Sijie, Mackenzie, Taylor, Natasha, and Carlie): It was great to see the civilized part of Jacksonville after a week of wildlife and adventures! Although there were many shops that we couldn't afford, we had an amazing time spending what little money we had, eating cheesecake, and playing Wizard’s Chess. This outdoor mall was BEAUTIFUL! Palm trees, fountains, and sculptures were all around! We found that we had extra time on our hands so we travelled to Jacksonville Landing where we found an amazing view! We also were able to see a little bit into the history of Jacksonville, which was named after the Andrew Jackson.

Group Mosquito Swarm #Karen (Allie, Matt, Baylee, Alex, Karen, and Maria): We travelled to Little Talbot Island today! It’s a state park filled with hiking trails and beautiful shorelines. We started off with a 2-mile hike through a forest and ended up on a deserted beach filled with sand dunes and cliffs. We climbed one and were happily content for a good hour, listening to music and watching the high tide come in. It was beautiful! On our hike back, Karen, being the smart girl she is, was swarmed with mosquitos because of her Mango lotion. Needless to say, we had a good laugh and kept our distance. We continued our hike to another area of the park where we hung out on a boardwalk and watched the waves destroy some high school kids sandcastle as the sun went down. It was a pretty entertaining day and a great way to relax!

Now, the group is back together again to make some dinner. But first, we have to make a quick run to the grocery store to grab some supplies to make tacos! It is definitely bittersweet to have ended our final service day but we are definitely excited for our free day tomorrow to explore more of Jacksonville!
