Today we enjoyed our free day in Mobile, Alabama to visit the USS Alabama battleship that was used during WWII. Visiting this piece of history was a great way to start our week and continue building the friendships we have been creating with one another. It was a two hour drive to this site from our location in Meridian, MS, but the time passed quickly with sing-a-longs to Disney’s Frozen Soundtrack and traditional car games like counting roadkill.
When we arrived at the USS Alabama, we had a fun picnic lunch with a great scenic view of planes, tanks and of course, the ship itself. While on the ship, we were able to explore the boat deck as well as the inside of the ship; seeing parts of the ship such as the kitchen, bunks, sleeping quarters and the tight doorways too small for our bigger participants. To make our day even better, we were able to go to a beach, allowing one of our participants to experience the beach for the first time.
Our day concluded with a great meal of BBQ from a restaurant that we stumbled upon on our way out from the beach and a retweet from Chancellor Loftin (#bowtiesarecool).
Our trip is off to a GREAT start and we can’t wait to begin serving starting early tomorrow!
