Memphis, TN 2 - Children's Health (Post 5)

So, today was our last day. As with all last days, it was filled with hugs, a few tears, and many heartfelt goodbyes with people we did not know a week ago. Volunteering at the hospital has been a life-changing experience for each and every individual on this service trip. Many of us have made little friends in the hospital by serving as unit buddies. We would go into the rooms of various patients who either asked or needed company to give their parents some time to breath and to of course entertain the kids. Our fearless leader, Mikko, fell in love with a baby girl, Carmen wanted to adopt a little girl that she worked with most of the week, and Rio even got over his fear of holding babies (with a little help from the world-renowned baby-holder, Emilie). Others enjoyed bringing arts and crafts to the rooms to help entertain the patients who were feeling bored by making magnets, door hangers, and coloring with the kiddos. Others still enjoyed bringing basic necessities that families don't think to bring to the hospital like deodorant or shampoo to help make them more comfortable. Lastly, the beverage cart brought great joy to those who needed a little pick-me-up in the mornings.

A common theme among all our favorite jobs is that we were all amazed at how simple of an action as sitting and coloring or showing that we genuinely care about each person in that hospital created such a feeling of gratitude from those we served. All the people with whom we interacted were so appreciative of our work, but little to do they know, we benefited just as much from being there.  We've fallen in love with LeBonheur's Children Hospital, the people in it, and the values it stands for. This week of service has been a blessing for us, and we cannot begin to express our gratitude towards our wonderful hosts.

On a completely different note, WE GOT SOME AUTHENTIC SOUL. Soul food, followed by soul music, and finished with soul development (during our reflection). Memphis was hopping this Friday evening. We scarfed down mounds of nachos and chili cheese fries at Huey's—and those were only the appetizers. The burgers that followed induced a state of such ecstasy that at one point I personally felt my spirit leave my body and watch myself sink my teeth into the juicy piece of beef. So I guess you could say it was pretty good.

We then proceeded to experience Suavo J, Mr. 88, and The Bones to get that true Memphis vibe in our bones. Katie and Mikko started the dancing, and we all soon were getting groovy before long. RIO CAN GET DOWN. Then, Steven stole the mic and serenaded Carmen for her "birthday." Everyone really got out of their shell, and we became very close as a group. When we all part ways tomorrow, some tears will be shed. Oh and other people might cry too.

P.S. Videos soon to follow.

Oh, and click here to see a little glimpse of how amazing and beautiful everyone is in Le Bonheur :D
