Lexington - Post Two
After arriving at the Lexington Habitat office at 8 am, we were warmly greeted by the project managers and office staff. They were so thankful that we were able to help out this week. Initially, they thought that they would be done with all the projects by this time in December, but found that this could be the busiest week!
We learned about the families and habitat as a whole and then split up to work at the two project sites. They took 4 from our group to work at the Savoy site, where they cleaned the house and helped finish it up for the dedication ceremony on Wednesday! The other 8 of us went to the Breckenridge site and did a variety of activities. We finished painting a few bedrooms, the hallway, and doors in the house. We also learned how to caulk, use proper painting techniques, and use a power drill.
This experience came with plenty of paint getting splattered everywhere!
The project managers were all very helpful and also really cool! None of them had degrees in anything related to construction, but said that when they found this job, they knew it was perfect. Each one of them said that they love waking up in the morning and coming to work. This goes to show that even if you’re unsure of what your calling may be, eventually you’ll find it (and it may surprise you!)
At about 3:30 we cleaned up our tools and packed up. Everything looked awesome, but we know that more needs to be done tomorrow when we come back! After leaving, we took a detour on the way home through downtown Lexington and to visit the University of Kentucky! Their campus was very pretty, lots of red brick buildings and very traditional looking. We all know it doesn’t compare to Mizzou, though!
We hope that tomorrow, we can continue to learn more about the families that we’re helping out and finish needed tasks at the project site!
