Day 1 started out great with beautiful Texas weather. Definitely different than Como. Our first task was to drive to Haven for Hope, which on Texas interstates is always a challenge. When we pulled up to Haven for Hope was a mural that took up a one whole side of the warehouse. One of the key aspects of the painting was the words "I thought I would never have to sleep on the outside." Wow, that really stuck out to me, so often I think we forget about the reality that no one plans to end up without a home poverty stricken. The first task of the day was sorting, hanging, and re organizing the clothing shop for those at the facilities. This was really an amazing and eye opening experiences of the the things that we so easily take for granted. Next on the list for us at Haven for Hope was decorating for Christmas around the facilitates. This was something I think taught us all a pretty good lesson that even the little things matter. Through being able to put up Christmas decorations we were able to see the moral of the residents increase.
After our day spent at Haven for Hope we came back to the church, cooked a family meal, went to the river walk in downtown San Antonio, ate some yummy gelato, and enjoyed community. It has been so amazing to be able to connect and bond with 11 people from all different background. I think the hardest part about the day was being able to stay gumby even when things were not going as planned, or we didn't have the supplies necessary. The best part of the day is hard to narrow down to one instance because being able to serve next to these amazing people has many highs. One high would definitely be being able to meet the residence and see there gratefulness for us being there, but also their willingness to open up and share their story. This was great start to an even more amazing week. We are loving it here in San Antonio and are working to give it our all in these short few days.
