Charleston 2 - Children (3/24)

Providence Baptist Church, the place we're calling home this week, was built right outside of Charleston, South Carolina 17 years ago. Today, for the first time in 17 years, it rained on Palm Sunday. Actually, it monsooned. But we began our day by celebrating with the PBC congregation, who were incredibly welcoming. We were so happy to meet so many of the members of the church! Fun facts: their office manager is Jewish.

To avoid the rain, we made our way to the Charleston Exchange Building, which is a museum and one of only three buildings in the US that were built before the Revolutionary War. We got to sign the Declaration of Independence!

And it had a dungeon where the British governor of Charles Town held American Patriots captive so they wouldn't influence the townspeople to rebel. We learned about the guy who created the Don't Tread on Me flag. And then our trip was held captive.

It stopped raining, finally, so we went to get lunch at this really adorable garden courtyard grill. Food is difficult, because one of our participants is allergic to:

Peanuts

Tree nuts

Egg yolks

Mayo

Sunflower seeds

Pumpkins seeds

Avocados

Bananas

Plums

Also, he's a vegetarian. #highmaintenance

After lunch, we finally made it to the beach! It was the first time Gina has been to the beach since she was 9. It was surreal. We walked to the end of a pier and saw dolphins! It was a magical experience for all of us. Then Lydia threw a single goldfish in the ocean and caused a mass seagull attack. We're thinking about getting a leash for Lydia.

After the beach we went to Walmart for the next three days. We clocked in at under $200, because we're financial planning/ grocery shopping badasses.

After Walmart we split into two teams: Team Run and Team Nap. Team Run went on an amazing adventure to the edge of Daniel Island.

The first 24 hours of our trip have been incredible. We've already met 5 people from Missouri. Small world. We are so excited to start serving tomorrow. Off to bed!
