Today we met Ann Ames who is our contact at Meyzeek Middle School, and she was very welcoming and hilarious! She was kind enough to show us around Smoketown and the neighboring area of Shelby Park. While there are problems concerning access to food, violence, and poverty in these areas, Ann helped to show us the progress that is taking place and that the community really works together to try to improve the conditions. We saw the site where our mural will be painted and with the help of Youth Build and some art teachers from Meyzeek the mural is all ready for us to paint this week.
In addition to getting a tour from Ann we also had the opportunity to meet some of the people that are involved in our projects this week, such as Mary Sullivan from the United Way and Michael McDonough from the Food Literacy Project. It was fantastic to be able to hear about all of these great programs that are taking place here in Louisville and know that we will be able to have a part in helping them to reach their goals. It has been a welcomed surprise how friendly and open the people of Louisville have been and this was no exception. Everyone seemed to be very grateful for our help, but we really feel like the lucky ones to be around these inspiring people and be a part of something that is bigger than ourselves. Everyone is pumped and ready to start the hard work tomorrow!
