Roll Tide #MIZ

Our first day in Guin began with unfiltered coffee and an early wake up call; however, this could not dampen the excitement that was evident throughout our group. Being in Alabama has been an increasingly eye-opening experience for most of us, especially those who have never been in a town smaller than Columbia. Driving through the rural countryside, it became evident that we are in a completely different environment, which will hopefully foster an environment of growth for all of us. As today was our "free-day," we visited the home of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Despite a minor meltdown from Adam as we seemingly approached Panera Bread, he was assuaged by our arrival at a famous college restaurant that hosts Nick Saban's radio show. We truly embraced the Southern spirit, eating everything from fried pickles to cabbage dressed in thousand island dressing as we were repeatedly called "ma'am" and "sir." The shock of Alabama's ridiculously large and plantation style buildings, the group entered the most popular spot in town: the bowling alley. Blake and Adam led the group with strong 100+ scores in the first game; yet, they progressively got worse throughout each turn and ended up barely breaking 50 in the second game. Despite our best Mid-western efforts, we were all beat by the son of the president of Habitat for Humanity, as the 'Bama boy scored a 178. Defeated but happily exhausted, 8/12 members took naps on the way home as we went to our third meal in less than six hours. We consumed mass amounts of queso to end a very successful first day.
