Pittsburgh - Women's Advocacy

Hello everyone!!

This week we're on a Women's Advocacy trip to Pittsburgh, PA.  We're helping New Voices Pittsburgh--a human rights organization focusing on the reproductive justice of black women and girls, and Planned Parenthood!!

The trip here was definitely eventful.  We created a caravan with the New Bern trip and we stayed at the site leader's house in her hometown of Mason, Ohio! (HUGE thank you to Lydia's mom for her amazing breakfast and hospitality!) We sparked a nationwide (MAB-wide) game of My Cow, which is a game that is fun to play in the car.  The best part about driving to Pennsylvania was definitely getting to drive through the tunnel from The Perks of Being a Wallflower (hopefully all of our readers know that iconic scene) and then coming through to the other side of the tunnel and witnessing the Pittsburgh skyline!

The past three days have been an absolute blast.  Monday we phone- banked for New Voices. New Voices is this AMAZING group of women, who advocate for the health and well-being of Black Women and Girls. They want to amplify the voices of Black women and girls to advance Sexual & Reproductive Health, LGBTQ Rights, Health Care Access, Ending Gender-Based Violence, Ending Mass Incarceration and Environmental Justice. They do this through leadership development, human rights, reproductive justice - and teaching young black women and girls to advocate for themselves. This consists of residents of the Pittsburgh area and asking them whether or not they were registered to vote and whether or not they planned on voting in the upcoming primary election.
At night, we like to bond over a one, or two, or eighteen games of Ultimate Werewolf.

Tuesday we canvassed houses for New Voices, along with another Alternative Breaks trip of young women from the University of Delaware! Canvassing, does not involve painting, much to some of our participants dismay. Canvassing is essentially the same thing, except in person instead of on the phone! Man, we did not realize how hilly Pittsburgh was until we had to walk it! Wednesday we phone banked again for New Voices. The passion and compassion New Voices showed us this week was astounding, and we are so thankful they gave us this opportunity. Shout out to Carmen and all of her employees for showing us such hospitality and radical love.
Of course, it hasn't been all work and no play!  The Pittpack, as we like to refer to ourselves as, have been exploring Pittsburgh on our downtime. Many of the participants have tried Indian food for the first time, we found dinosaurs made of condiments (and a glass castle to accompany it), testing all of the local coffee joints, and visited the Pittsburgh zoo! If you aren't sure what that is, you should google it.
