Charleston - Health

Today, our group served at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. We were split into four groups. One group spent the morning in the Emergency Department doing patient transport. They commented on how many people they met that had amazing life stories. It really felt like they were making a difference because the nurses were free to do more important work rather than the patient transport. Another group spent the morning in education organizing applicant information for potential residents. This helped these students understand the residency application process that they will be experiencing later in their schooling. A third group was on an inpatient floor transporting patients and assisting with clerical work. This allowed the busy nurses focus on direct patient care. The last group observed patient care in the ICU. They provided basic assistance to the doctors and nurses and helped with patient transport. This group was also able to observe a bronchoscopy. All four groups were amazed by how many incredible people they met. Everyone has been very kind to us, and we are looking forward to the rest of the week! After volunteering, our group was able to go to Folly Beach and enjoy the beautiful weather.
