Pensacola - Habitat for Humanity

Day 56

For the first time, our alarms did not go off at 6:30am. We actually were able to stay in our luxury beds until 8am! Neat right? The day had to begin somewhat early because it was going to be filled with adventurous activities. We started out the day by hiking through thick and luscious trails next to the University of West Florida. After two full hours of fresh air in the jungle, we back into the rental convertible we got for the day to continue our journey. Just kidding, we all squished back into our smelly, dirty, sour van and drove along the scenic ocean route which consisted of mainly trees, and just a little of ocean saying hello from the other side. Neat!

Our next stop was the Big Lagoon State Park. Which we had to pay for. Not so neat. But it was worth it. We ate lunches on picnic tables on the beach overlooking the sparkling lagoon. The water was so close to the tables it would periodically splash our toes, like a little refreshing surprise as we enjoyed our nutrient-lacking lunch that consisted of what little was left in the pantry. We explored around and took candid photos that we most definitely posed for. It was so neat! Next, we made a pit stop at Sonic (SO-nïc) a fancy shmancy smoothie cafe. After waiting approximately 2.34 hours for our scrumptious smoothies, we drove to Perdido Key. The drive was fantastic in our rental convertible as we slurped our smoothies and felt the warm salty wind in our hair. You really should have seen Josh's hair, flowing in the wind like a majestic mane. When we arrived at Perdido Key, we channeled our inner strippers and changed into our white shirt and Jean combo for our family pic next to the convertible. Some of us may or may not have flashed the cars driving past, but hey we'll never see them again. We ventured onto the beach, where two professional photographers took family photos of us. One of them even tried the newest trend: cutting off everyone's heads.

After watching Dylan and Josh swim playfully like otters in love for a while, it was time to head towards our next adventure: Joe Patti's where we found the most gourmet RAW fish and lobsters in all of the land. The smell: surprising not as bad if you compare it to our car. It was neat, to say the least, to see the fish industry "alive" and well.

After Carly so graciously let us try her beignets we shopped at the finest stores in Pensacola. Alvin's Trap House had all our tacky tourists’ needs except for the famous Salt Life stickers. So after the long hike up a mountain to the second store, we finally found the stickers we had longed for all week. Unfortunately, the famous Salt Life stickers were not available in the color we desired, the color of our souls... Black. All of us but one left the store lifeless of salt. Our final stop was at Pig Leg Pete's (according to Mel) where we feasted on Oysters, Calamari, Crab legs and all of the fried food you can imagine! The $300 bill was definitely neat and all of us left with pregnant food bellies off to the MAB Methodist mansion.

Currently we're all packing up and getting ready for the long ride home tomorrow, so that means we should too. Overall, it's been a neat trip. We'll surely miss: swaggy Cara thinking she's gangster, mother Bridget's overalls, Josh's snoring and flatulence, Natalie dying every day, Dylan being our muscle man, Jess wearing socks and chacos out to gallery night, Carly being the group's photographer, Lindsey's obsession over Lil Wayne, Delaney being so dang candid, Allie's guidance at the job site, and of course Melanie's deflating bed, and lastly Samantha constantly sticking songs in our head. It's been a NEAT week, but these Tigers are ready to go back.

Signing off forever,

Melanie and Samantha
