Moore--Disaster Relief

Day 6-

Wow! What a week it has been! We cannot believe that we have to hit the road back to CoMo tomorrow.

We returned to our project at the mobile home sites today. We continued with tree and debris removal. We felt pretty awesome and empowered today in our matching Mizzou Alternative Break t-shirts. And no worries, tomorrow we’ll be matching again in our bright yellow “Serve Moore” t-shirts we got for free!

The crew that was packing up the elderly woman’s home got to go back to her house after lunch to see her one last time before we left Oklahoma as well. We brought her her favorite ice cream and shared a bittersweet goodbye with our new friend.

After finishing our service at the site, we went back to Serve Moore. There, we had our debriefing meeting with Michael, one of the main dudes there (awesome guy). He had a small presentation ready for us that showed us how many hours we served, how much money our service saved, and other bits of information from the week (see photo above).  It was really great to see the result of our work!

We hit up an Oklahoma/Southern staple, a.k.a. the mother ship, a.k.a. Whataburger for dinner. We also returned to the OKC Memorial to see it lit up at night. It was a beautiful tribute and a great reminder of the strength and resilience of Oklahomans before we make our trek back to Missouri.

We had a surprise cookie cake and ice cream celebration for Elise’s birthday when we got home and now we are anxiously awaiting midnight so we can ring in her 19th birthday! In the morning, we’ll be on our way back to Columbia and back to our normal lives.

We know that the experiences had here, the people we met, and the friendships made were so impactful and something we will remember and talk about for years to come! Thank you, Moore, for everything!
