Gulfport-Habitat for Humanity

We started our trip to Gulfport, Mississippi at 6 a.m. Saturday morning, trading in a blizzard for 60 degree weather.  After a 12 hour drive and a couple of stops for gas along the way, we finally arrived!  We got settled into our housing for the week and rearranged the living room to make the couches in a circle.  We ended the night with a couple of team bonding games to get to know each other.

Sunday, the MissiLadies + One drove into New Orleans and spent a day walking around the French Quarters.  We were the typical tourists, stopping to take pictures of every storefront and street.  It was amazing because almost every street was decorated with beads and bright colors. The Mardi Gras stores and the market were our favorite stops because of all the different things in them, including masks, hand painted skulls and jewelry.  There were so many painters and musicians that filled the streets with their art.  We even got to try traditional southern seafood, like gumbo, jambalaya, and even alligator!

We started Monday morning off by going to the Habitat for Humanity offices to learn about the history of the organization in this area.  After learning about that, we went out to our house site and met our awesome site managers, Nolan, Jordan, and Jared.  They started us off with the tedious but necessary job of caulking and spackling the outside of the house.  Once we finish that, we can start on the next phase of the house and hopefully meet our goal for the week: painting the entire outside of the house!

Each night, we’ve had a couple of people cook dinner for the whole group.  We are excited to see who the best cook is! Sunday night, we had a tilapia curry dish, and Monday, we had fettuccine alfredo and garlic bread. After dinner, we have ended each night by playing games and getting to know each other better!

XOXO,

MissiLadies + One
