Taos, NM - Habitat for Humanity

Today was an amazing day for our Habitat for Humanity group. We have grown stronger as a group and have mastered teamwork. The bond we have formed will last a lifetime and we have created unforgettable memories.

The start of the day we went to Vera’s home where we were faced with the challenge of constructing the roof. The work that we did was back breaking and it took the entire crew to form the essential structure. We all had to move the trusses across the roof and nail it to the walls of the house. It was extremely rewarding to see the finish product of the roof being built. In addition to forming the roof we had a fun time goofing around and playing with the lively, neighborhood cat that we named Peter. It turns out the Peter is a female named Precious. We decided to feed the cat turkey during lunch and at one point she tried to jump in our van to leave with us.

Another interesting thing we did at the construction site was writing a loving message that will now be placed at the doorway of Vera’s home. It was intriguing to see all the well-wishes that groups before us have written on the infrastructure of her house. It really made us all reflect on how much work is needed to put into building a house.

Lastly, we finished up the day by going to Lynn’s, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer, Earthship home. We got to see all of the work she has put in order to create and energy-sustainable home the uses the environment for electricity, heat, and food. It is a unique home that has a lot of character build into it.

All in all, we have gotten to learn more about Tao’s and the friendly locals that make it their mission to serve others.
