Savannah 1 - Habitat for Humanity (1)

Most college students aspire to spend their spring break hanging out with friends, taking a week off from school and letting go of all worries. Most venture to the sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast to unwind and relax, which was the opinion of the Salvation Army cook our MAB group grew to love and appreciate. What we learned goes beyond just helping someone or some cause. It ties us back to one of MAB's principles: Serve, don't help. Selfless servitude embodies the genuine nature of giving back to the community without expecting anything in return. However, we received so much more than a thank you. We created lasting bonds with the workers at the Salvation Army and truly felt a mutual appreciation for the work that each one of us did today. We will strive towards this new found appreciation with each encounter we make on this trip. We stood in a circle peeling potato skins, folding and rearranging clothes, going door to door promoting the salvation army and in midst of it all, we listened to the personal stories, hardships and realities of the people we were lucky enough to serve with. Although this was our first day serving here in Savannah, the stories we heard and experiences that were shared are enough to make us thrilled for what lies ahead.
