Today we MABroke Bad
Good evening family, friends and blog readers, this is Ellie and Hannah blogging to you live from Santa Fe, NM. Our second and last free day of our trip was filled with sites, adventure, Breaking Bad and most of all, friendship.
Some of us started off the day with a run while the less motivated went straight to the bakery to get coffee and breakfast. The food was just as heartwarming as the environment, which gave us energy for a long but exciting day.
The previous day we had decided to venture an hour to Albuquerque for the day without any semblance of a plan. Many of us quickly decided that the Breaking Bad sites were an absolute must see. This included the A1A Car Wash, which Walt and Skyler purchased in season 4 as well as Los Pollos Hermanos, which turned out to not even be a real place but merely a chain restaurant called Twister.
The highlight of our Breaking Bad extravaganza was going to the White's house. When we first pulled up we immediately noticed that this was not a place open to the public, but a private residence with security warnings displayed in the yard. Before we could even get out of the car the garage door opened and the owner was standing there. That's when decided our best course of action would be to do a drive by to snap some pictures after taking a lap around the neighborhood.
After the Breaking Bad fans got their fix we headed over to Old Town, an old fashioned area with shops and cafes. However, as if the Breaking Bad tour wasn't enough, every store seemed to sell Breaking Bad memorabilia including the iconic blue meth made by Walter and Jesse (don't worry parents, it was just rock candy). We then did some walking around and bought souvenirs. Afterwards we grabbed a bite to eat and brought Truman to the University of New Mexico campus.
We then headed to the adventurous part of our day trip, the Sandia Mountain, where we took a 15-minute tram ride to its peak, which is located 10,378 feet above sea level. The ride up was an adventure within itself, some of us overcoming our fear of heights but maintaining the principle that we're in this together.
Breathtaking is an understatement to the view that met us at the top. Not only did we get to see where we came up from, but we also got to discover the equally beautiful view that could be seen from the other side. After leaving the 70-degree ground below, the majority of us were not prepared for the 30-degree drop and 33 mpw winds that were at the top of the mountain. People looked at us like we were crazy, taking pictures in the snow in nothing but our shorts and T-shirts.
The events of our spontaneous day lead to closer friendships and an abundance of inside jokes *Pueblo*. These two days have been incredible getting to know Santa Fe and each other. We are ready to start serving tomorrow at Habitat, knowing that we have each other's backs.
