Today was our first day of actual service at the Woodlands! Woodlands is a year round 52-acre campus that is completely assemble to people of any array of disabilities. They have served over 60,000 people Yesterday we got settled into the camp, where we are staying in the camper dorms. We got to experience the Music Ensemble with 11 participants with various disabilities as they were rehearsing for the spring recital. We were able to directly interact with them by playing instruments, dancing, and singing along. The rest of the night consisted of shopping for our groceries
Today we got the full tour of the facilities and got to understand the purpose of the Woodlands first hand. We were amazed at the commitment they had to making an environment that we inclusive for all people and the amount of work that it takes to operate the Woodlands! After the tour we kicked off our week of service with renovating the Par 3 golf course that is handicapped accessible. Once we were done cleaning the golf course we cleaned and began painting the camp counselor dorms.
The maintenance crew expressed to us how grateful they were to have so many of us because of our unyielding work ethic. Adam and Cassidy made the group a spaghetti dinner after we completed our service for the day (muy deliciso)! We then headed over to the Wellness Center for AquaStars: a program where disabled children experience the freedom of mobility through aqua therapy. We played volleyball with a child who could not help from smiling every time he scored a point.
All in all, the day was a complete success. We helped improve the image of a camp that benefits many people on a daily basis, we had a family dinner and became a stronger group and we got a taste of what it’s like to truly promote the mission of the woodlands.
Stay tuned for more information about our experience at the woodlands.
All the best,
Squad Woodlands
