Philadelphia 1 - Homelessness/Poverty (1)

Get in a van with 12 people, drive 900 miles across the country, stay in a local church, and have no access to wi-fi. Sounds awful but it sounds adventurous. What issue could cause 12 college students to partake in such an adventure? Being a part of an alternative break trip and helping out with homelessness and poverty.
That is what we have chosen to do. Give up our time and stereotypical spring break trip to the beach filled with alcohol and drugs in an attempt to make our distant communities a better place. And today, we finished step one of our journey: arriving to Philadelphia.
After a 16-hour drive, multiple stops, windy conditions and a steamy van our group has finally arrived. There is an ongoing debate of which was bumpier the unpaved toll roads or the conversation in the van but low and behold we are here and ready to serve.
It is something special about gathering a group of people together from multiple backgrounds to help serve a common cause, especially when nothing is required of them but instead they all want to be here. As our first day comes to a close, we have taken time to reflect on the journey here and our ultimate purpose for being on this trip.
We would like to leave this day we some words of wisdom-

“Not everyone will be like you but you can make everyone feel like you”
