Today was quite an adventure for our team in Brooklyn! We started off the morning with a hearty breakfast and set out for a full day of hard work. Right away four students drove to a home in Brooklyn where they helped Mr. Voloshin with some gutting and mold remediation. Mr. Voloshin was a very strange character to say the least. From cracking jokes that we could not understand because of his thick Russian accent to pointing a gun at Julia…no worries, it was a fake gun that was actually a lighter. He helped us work all day until the job was done. It didn’t take as long as we expected and it was done pretty quickly with only four girls and James. Overall, we believe he is part of the Russian Mafia (knuckle tattoos to prove it) and are glad to say we finished his site without getting him really upset (except when Kelsey E. put a hole in the wrong wall).
*This is the correct wall being torn down...
While those students worked hard at their site, the rest of us moved furniture, tools and other items out of a home on the street behind the volunteer house we are staying at. This property is being used as a rental home so all of that good stuff needed to be loaded into a moving truck in order to get an eager family moved in! Loading the moving truck was a difficult task (especially what seemed like a 500 pound couch), but as the saying goes, teamwork makes the dream work!
As the day continued it began to rain, but our spirits remained high and we pushed through our work! When the moving truck was full to the brim we drove to a storage shed with Pastor Brian to unload it all. The moving went smoothly expect for the broken glass and Jon and Bri almost getting murdered in the dark hallway of the storage shed (Cold. Scared. Alone. At least they had some calming tunes). After all the unloading we headed back home for some lunch.
Our whole group ate lunch together and after our bellies were full we set out to do a little painting! We all primed the walls of a home that belongs to a Vietnam veteran who has been waiting to move back into his home for 2 years. It was such a great feeling to know that we were involved in this incredible process of getting this man back into his home. We danced and painted for the rest of the day and before we knew it all the priming was done and it was 7 o’clock! Our reward for all of our hard work today was free pizza from our amazing project manager, Eric. We all had dinner together followed with reflection and showers. Tomorrow is our last day and we are looking forward to giving it our all, keeping the MAB principle in mind, THIS IS IT!
Signed, Bri and Kelsey N.
