After our first full day of serving at both Kids Meals Houston and Creative Dreams, we’ve been fortunate enough to have plenty of time to reflect on our eventful day. Kids Meals Houston is a non-profit organization that delivers nutritious lunches to the doors of preschool children in need, free of cost, every weekday, for a year. Creative Dreams’ mission is to provide a safe place for financially disadvantaged and foster youth to meet the Author of Creativity while exploring their own creativity through art, dance and music.
This morning we spent three hours making sandwiches, packing sack lunches, and prepared them for delivery. We reached our goal of making 2,200 lunches within this time. Who would have thought it would be humanly possible to make this many sandwiches and lunches within this small amount of time? It was extremely eye opening to witness the time and effort people are willing to put into such a small organization that has the power to feed thousands of hungry children. Some of us were lucky enough to rock a classic hairnet, as well to prepare for our aspirations to be stay-at-home parents. Each person we encountered at the organization was so thankful for our service and excited that we’ll be returning for the next two days!
After a nice break for some hometown BBQ, we headed back to Creative Dreams to prepare for our first day of service with some amazing children. A few of us were nervous before their arrival, not knowing entirely what to expect from our initial interactions with the organization as a whole. Little did we know we would instantly be welcomed with loving arms by each person we encountered throughout the afternoon. As we had time to connect with kids one-on-one, we also had time to understand how close knit this “family” is. We’ve already realized after one afternoon how important of a consistency Creative Dreams is for each one of these kids, which gives us such a better appreciation for every individual donating their time. After making some amazing connections with the kids in just the first day, we truly cannot wait to see what the rest of the week has in store.
