Alarms went off at 8 a.m. Then 8:30. Then 9. Finally a group message stated the obvious: no one was getting out of bed with the raging storm outside. We slept in late this morning, a pro and con of the day because we needed rest but hated to miss a moment of our free day. Finally as the downpour waned into a drizzle, we made our way into downtown Savannah.
Our first stop was at Savannah Bee Company. We sampled honeys, tried on honey-based products, and even put honey in our coffee. The most successful takeaway was learning that honeycombs taste great with apples and cheese (Rachel’s high of the day.) Once everyone had their fill, we moved on to find souvenir shops.
The rain had picked up, and by the time we reached the river walk we were soaked. Some locals in a candy store recommended we try out the restaurant right next door, Warehouse Bar and Grille. On the wall of the bathroom we left our mark amongst the dozens of signatures with “MAB Savannah 2015.” After lunch we shopped around, took pictures, and went to Leopold’s for ice cream. Finally we visited St. John the Baptist’s Cathedral. It was beautiful with detailed stained-glass windows. Amy loved being able to light candles inside, and Erica called it the best part of her day.
We went home for a quick (read: two-hour) nap before dinner at Bella’s Italian CafĂ©. From the outside it didn’t look like anything special, but inside it was ambient and the food was delicious. Plus, they didn’t mind seating twelve college students without a reservation. All the restaurants we’ve tried so far have surpassed our expectations.
For the free day finale, we took haunted tours. Our trip was separated into two hearses (yes, hearses.) The tour guides drove us around the city and told ghost stories. More than one person said the highlight of their day was hearing Shelby squeal when the driver threw on his breaks to add an extra scary effect to one tall tale. Our trips both got different routes and stories from our guides, so afterward we got to compare.
All in all, it was a successful second day in the city. Tomorrow we get to serve our first day with Hoofs 4 Healing. A few people are nervous about the horses and the hard labor, but we can’t wait to get to work.
