Our afternoon was our first experience at the Boys & Girls Club, and we loved every minute! We had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Tammy, "Queen Mom" to about 80 kids in the Fairview area. We started off with a tour of the facility that is in the process of getting state accreditation as a educational facility. This means that this week we will be creating "centers" and decorating the halls to make it a fun and encouraging learning environment for all. Our duties today started with an intense game of Mafia, in which our new friend Kaiser totally whipped us all. After games, we got to help with "Career Launch' which included working on resumes and professional goals. Something neat about the Club is the pro-active attitude and determination to get these kids "college-focused" showing them the only way to succeed is a higher education. We felt Ms. Tammy leading this drive based on her own decision to decline a college education for lack of outside encouragement. Her strict use of "yes sir, yes ma'am" and a respect for oneself and the culture around them were inspiring to us all!
One of our favorites, Tyler, was a 6th grader who enjoyed drawing pictures and selling them to us, Dan even had a portrait of himself offered to him! "Power Hour" was the hour long segment of the afternoon where we got to work one-on-one with students, helping with homework and school projects. The rest of the afternoon was full of (overly) competitive chess matches, movies and popcorn, and playing dragons and princess! The Club even has old arcade games set up for entertainment.
We know this will be an amazing week working with the most compassionate and hard-working people, and if it includes more hog jaw, count us in!
