Eagle Butte, SD - Native American Issues (Post 2)

Hi and thanks for checking back with our trip!

In case you didn't know, we are spending the week on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in Eagle Butte, SD, and working with members of the Lakota people to help rehab houses.

On Tuesday, we continued our work on the volunteer house.

After work we went to hear a presentation at Four Bands Community Fund about economic problems facing the reservation. We met with Tanya Fiddler, whose husband, Larry, passed away in July and was very close to many volunteers from Mizzou. Here's a video to learn more about the organization: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zhsco4JocE. Thanks, Tanya!

Today, we continued our construction work. We're almost done with the reflection/dining room in the volunteer house! We've been adding insulation and sheetrock to the ceiling. Tomorrow we will continue installing drywall and picking up trash around the neighborhood we are staying in.

For lunch, we had Indian tacos at a fundraiser for the Lakota Nation women's basketball team.

We all got to know our construction supervisor, Ted Eagle, a lot better. Here's a picture of him and his son Ted Jr. at lunch.

And we played with puppies!

Check back soon to hear more about our trip! Wopila tanka! (Many thanks!)
