Columbia, SC - Habitat for Humanity (Post 3)

Oh hey! Connor (Carl) and John (Jack) are coming at you from a cold and rainy Columbia, South Carolina. At the moment the rest of the group is attempting to find the misplaced Frozen DVD—we're having a really rough time with this movie.

Back to our ASB shenanigans—

This morning Connor, John, Alex, and Garret got up bright and early to go on a two-mile running tour of campus. The run got off to a rough start in the chilly morning air with a very large hill, but finished triumphantly with a wheezing John and lap around the University of South Carolina's historic Horseshoe.

Promptly at 8, the runners woke up the rest of the gang with an abrupt lights-on and a lovely rendition of "Good Morning Beautiful." They loved it. But not really— they were actually really mad about it. Whateva. The gang enjoyed a nice breakfast and then loaded up in Mom and Dad (the rented mini van and surburban if anyone is just now tuning in) and headed back to the house from the first day of service.

Today definitely had its fair share of challenges. When we first arrived the weather decided it was time to rain. And rain. And rain.  Luckily for us, we were able to take a break and build a small bonfire to warm us up and spend some time with the Habitat staff. We split up into three groups (one lucky group was under a tent— not fair). One group took down and then put up an entire side of vinyl on the house.  Another worked to clean up the site, which consisted of picking up trash, moving wood, and more backbreaking labors. The final (and lucky) group worked on cutting wood with a circular saw to make a staircase. (Cue parodies of Frozen— Do you wanna build a staircase?)

The rain got everywhere. We cannot stress that enough. It was in ponchos, in shoes, in boxers, and in every nook and cranny. Despite the rain, however, the group worked SO WELL and we couldn't be prouder to be a part of such a stellar and efficient group of individuals. The Habitat group complimented us on our willingness to work in the less than ideal conditions— but hey, the cold never bothered us anyway (Frozen again?).

After a day of hard work, we quenched our thirst with a much-deserved Sonic Happy Hour run before cleaning up at the YMCA. The gang returned back to our humble abode squeaky clean and took a quick catnap to prepare for Taco Tuesday. Richard graced us with his family's famous guacamole and Jessica made some killer chicken tacos. Dinner was quite delicioso.

After dinner the group decided to go to a South Carolina Gamecocks baseball game. We were very impressed by South Carolina's baseball stadium. It was on par with many minor league stadiums. What didn't impress us was the Missouri-like weather. We stuck it out until the Gamecocks had a sizeable lead and then hurried back to the house to get out of the cold.

The group had a fantastic reflection time and as we speak the group is still frantically looking for the lost (some believe it to be stolen) Frozen DVD. It's getting intense.

Also, John was just delivered a note and cookie from his Columbian Comrade. (Side note: we each secretly drew a name before this trip and this is our Columbian Comrade who we give note of encouragement and small gifts to throughout the week.) John REALLY likes cookies, especially Mama Voss' oatmeal chocolate chips. Anyway guys, it's been a great week and we can't believe we're already at the halfway point of our service. We can't wait to see what tomorrow holds for us and in true Frozen fashion—
Okay, byeee.

With MAB love,
Carl and Jack
(Connor and John)
