Today started just like how life started with no sense of direction. While Kim was driving downtown Houston, we just couldn't find the site we were suppose to volunteer at. Half of the group got out of the van while we tried to find a parking spot. After about driving on one-way streets for 20 minutes, we realized we were on Main Street instead of North Main Street. We ended up finding our destination and started our project at The Kids Village. The project consisted of painting a waiting room and 3 hallways. It was suppose to take us 2 whole days to finish this project; however, our group worked efficiently to complete the task in one day. So, tomorrow we have back up volunteer projects lined up. The vision of the Kids Village was to convert the Tuberculosis clinic into a kid friendly environment. So by doing that, we contributed to phase one of the project. We painted the walls to get a fresh coat of paint, so the staff can decorate the waiting room and halls with murals. After completing phase one of the project, the site-coordinator gave us a tour of the building and informed us of the different clinics and resources they offer to their clients. The last stop of the tour was the immunization clinic where one child was screaming non-stop. We did not stay in that portion of the clinic for more than a minute because of the loudness. We were hoping to contribute to phase two of the project, but the materials and supplies were not accessible at the time. We are very grateful we had the opportunity to make a difference in this community and cannot wait to see pictures of the final project. After finishing up our service for the day, we decided to explore the city of Houston. We went to The Galleria (A Mall) where we spent a few hours shopping and exploring the perimeter of the area. It was a relaxing time to spend with each other and take pictures for the photo scavenger hunt. The group decided they wanted to try one of the best cupcake places in Houston, Sprinkles. This day has been a fabulous time getting to know each other as well as serving the Houston community. Tomorrow will only bring more smiles, laughs, and service!
