Today was our third day of volunteering with Children's Hospital Colorado! We truly had another great day! Today was the last day of our three day rotation of the different volunteer activities. Furthermore, our trip made an impact outside of our typical volunteer rotation. 5 of us donated blood which translates into 30 lives saved by people on our ASB trip. Children's Hospital Colorado was shocked that people in our group wanted to donate blood because they have never had a volunteer group want to do this before. This is quite the accomplishment and the hospital was very appreciative! Our participants were very supportive of each other and there for each other when one was giving blood! It was a very meaningful experience because the blood will stay at the hospital and go directly to the children. Our trip is really doing as much as we can and are giving all that we have to serve. Each of us wore our blue ASB shirts so it was very apparent who the ASBers were.
There were several different experiences that happened today that really struck our participants. The group manning the art carts had the privilege of coloring and reading books with a little girl who has been to Give Kids the World. This is where the ASB Kissimmee trip is currently serving and is a Disney theme park for children with terminal illnesses. ASB is all connected despite the different locations. With this little girl, we learned that her twin brother is severely ill and must attend Children's Hospital frequently for surgeries. At Give Kids the World, the little boy had his wish of meeting Donald Duck granted. During the time we spent with the little girl, she could not stop talking about the fun she had at the park. Furthermore, she told us that one day she wants to go back to the park to volunteer. This desire to volunteer has been present with many of the children we are serving. This attitude among the children was absolutely overwhelming for us. As we sat in our chairs we realized that sitting before us is the future of the world's volunteerism. This eight-year-old girl has the biggest heart and we are confident that she will be able to share it in much the same way that we as ASBers strive to share our hearts with the children that we have been serving.
After volunteering, our group headed to Red Rocks. Our group really enjoyed walking through the gorgeous area and taking pictures of the scenery. We then came home and cooked a family dinner. Tiio made incredible chicken fettuccine alfredo and we also had a Caesar salad, great garlic bread, and Blue Bell ice cream for dessert. We also met Joe, our main contact at the church, tonight. We are so grateful for the people of Calvary Baptist Church for letting us stay at their church!
This week has been so impactful for our trip. Everyday we come back and think that we had the best day ever. All of us have siblings so we know what it is like to have brothers and sisters. However, this week is a rare opportunity to step outside of our current lives and see what it is like for people who have siblings suffering from different medical conditions. All of the kids that were with us were so easy to work with! Many times we find ourselves at the hospital hanging out with the kids. However, when we stop to think about it, the children that we are hanging out with are patients or siblings of patients and are there due to unfortunate circumstances. As volunteers, we are trying our hardest to ensure that every child we interact with has the best possible experience. Several of us have had experiences working with children before and we have loved continuing this volunteering! We have had so many concrete experiences and inspirations that will stay with us long past this week. What we are doing here in Colorado can impact the children we interact with far more than we ever imagined.
