Lexington 12/20:

The Dali Lama once said, "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive." As we completed our fourth day of service, we really began to think about the special people that would be occupying the homes we were so diligently working on. We took note of their gratitude, but most importantly, their willingness to help others in their situations. We found it fascinating that many of them were working with us side by side to build homes for not only themselves, but other families as well. Although service hours are a requirement to receive a habitat home, it is evident that the people are working for much more than that. In these amazing people we clearly defined our feelings about service-and personally experienced a sense of community. Habitat for Humanity has proven to be an organization not only equipped to survive through time, but also motivated to spread its influence. It is with love and compassion from its many volunteers and organizers that has kept the luster of its shine on the world, and it is through love and compassion that other people will be motivated to do the same. We learned from a few of the volunteers that they went to college to pursue a completely different path then what they were doing now, yet their love for humanity and compassion for those less fortunate brought them to work with an organization much larger than themselves. ---Kentamily
