Hola from NOLA!
Today los tigres de Mizzou went to the Real zoo. Big surprise there, the animal trip goes to zoo, right? Fun fact, the zoo actually avoided too much damage from Hurricane Katrina - the only noticeable damage we saw were bamboo shoots that were knocked down and grew crooked. During Hurricane Katrina, two otters died as a result of the storm. At the zoo, we saw all sorts of interesting things, including trained elephants! They didn't flip Reese Witherspoon around like in "Water for Elephants" but they were still super cute. Elephants have really excellent memories, and can remember things for years. We saw a Pumba (like the "Lion King") and found a TEENIE TINY turtle. He was so cute and we named him Ralph – though at first we called him Truman – and were so sad when we had to leave him behind.
Next, we went to the French Quarter. Everyone was excited because we a) love food, b) love shopping and c) love NEW ORLEANS! Anyway, so we got there and wandered around Jackson Square. We saw all sorts of great artwork, like fleur de lis (that New Orleans symbol) and art made from sheet metal from the damaged houses that were destroyed by the hurricane. We jammed with some guy playing the tuba and ran into some other MU students on spring break. We then met up with the other ASB trip here in NOLA for dinner at Snug Harbor and had some delicious foods including gumbo and other seafood items. Be jealous. We then had dessert numero uno (bread pudding and pecan pie) and headed out for some beignets – dessert numero dos - from the famous CafĂ© du Monde. Twas delicious.
First day of work is tomorrow and we're super excited to hang with the puppies and kitties! Then we're hanging out with the other New Orleans trip in their church, hopefully watching "The Skeleton Key."
Geaux (MU) Tigers!
