Hello, Lesser Prairie Chicken Lovers!! Before the Sun showed her lovely face, the New Mexico group embarked on a journey to locate everyone's favorite species of chicken. Our guides at Milnesand Prairie Reserve, Tish and Cory, showed us the "Leks" (where the males attempt to find chicken love). Between our Sun salutes, we heard the chickens talking to one other and saw several in flight. After this early morning endeavor, the group went back to the cabin for a little A.M. nap and breakfast (compliments of THE Steven Dickherber). At 11:30, we went back out with Tish to mark fences so the chickens wouldn't get bu-bus running into the fences. Meanwhile, the men in the group experienced the Sun's mean side as they were fried like chickens (wait, we didn't say that…let's say lobsters).
After marking fences for a couple of hours, and having the wind, sand, and Madame Sun make their mark on the group, everyone headed back for some much deserved rest. The kind and thoughtful site leaders provided their group with ice cream and Powerade after the toil. After all this, if y'all think we don't love chickens enough, think again. We attended an intriguing presentation on lesser prairie chickens by our lovely guide Tish, and, after a short break, spoke with Willard, the manager of a cattle ranch nearby, where we heard his well-informed thoughts on the grassland habitat here and the impact humans have made on it.
With taco soup and grilled cheese in stomach, and prairie chicken in heart (duuuhhhh), the ASB group in New Mexico salutes all (prairie) chicken lovers and signs off for Sunday…
