3/25/12
Today our alarms went off at eight, and we finally got around to getting out of bed at around nine. We then found Allana. She flew here rather than driving, because she had wanted to go to a friend's wedding. We sat in the art gallery after a breakfast of poptarts, bananas, and coffee to discuss our menu for the week. Next we trekked to Aldi's and said hi to the friendly Hispanic neighborhood, dressed in their Sunday best. We wandered the aisles of Aldi's, mouths agape at the low prices and got some great deals on some delectable avocados. We walked back, and began clawing at the sandwiches, demolishing an innocent loaf of bread, and many slices of cheese, turkey, and ham. It was a sad day for sandwichkind.
We then went to the garden to begin our work. Little did we know, the battle that faced us would be harrowing. For several hours we made war on the weeds and grass of the backyard with naught but our hands and a mower pushed by Allana. The weeds were destroyed, yet the number of casualties on our side was surprising. An arm was cut, a participant had minor surgery performed with tweezers to remove a thorn from the palm of her hand, and a shoe had to be washed of dog poop.
After we came in, several people went for a run while the rest of us napped and pigged out on an entire bag of animal crackers. We then split into two teams, half of us would cook, and the other half would clean up after the meal. Our cooks prepared a marvelous meal of quesadillas, chips and salsa, and a wonderful avocado mash. It was quite delicious. We ate on the porch (read: roof) because our kitchen space is limited and we are forbidden from eating elsewhere (do you want ants?) We then cleaned the kitchen in record time whilst listening to classic rock courtesy of Pandora. And here we sit in our wonderful artsy… place.
With love and avocado mash,
ASB Chicago
