Alternative Spring Break has begun!
We left the Mizzou campus at 6:00pm Friday with the "Pearl of the South" leading the way for the "Crimson Stallion" (the aptly named cars we rented) and started our longer-than-expected journey to Charleston, South Carolina.
We meandered our way through Kentucky and Tennessee and used our walkie-talkies to teach the Pearl of the South riders their states and capitals. But when the walkie-talkies stopped working and Dillon — the driver of the Crimson Stallion — passed a "Welcome to Indiana" sign, we knew something was awry.
So, as embarrassing as it would be to see a map of our travels, we finally made it to Charleston around 1:00pm Saturday.
We drove straight to the Miracle League and commenced our first volunteer project. The Miracle League is an adaptive athletic organization that helps children with disabilities. Our first task as a group was simply to cheer on the kids during their first baseball game. There is nothing more heart-warming than seeing the pride and happiness in a child when they realized they are loved.
After the first game we each got paired with a specific child and got to play the next game with them. At our evening meeting last night we unanimously decided that the most remarkable thing about the children was how pure they were. They were so excited to meet each of us and just have a good time. Patrick's buddy even turned his hat backwards because he wanted to imitate Patrick, and Dillon's buddy asked if he would be back next week.
All in all, we were beyond thrilled with our first volunteering experience and made such great connections with the children.
