It's not so hot in Hotlanta. Our first full day in Atlanta is, according to Anna, the kind of weather when you "forget air exists," or in other words a beautiful day of 70 degrees. It was difficult to wake up after a night of exploring our wonderful housing, St. Mark's United Methodist Church, but we arrived at Cafe 458 at 8:45am.
Cafe 458 is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the homeless and getting them back into the workforce. On Sundays, the cafe is open to the public from 10am to 2pm for brunch, and all the proceeds go to the organization. Some of us volunteered as waiters, while others of us were greeters. We met many interesting and lovely people throughout the day, including a man named True who educated us on Alkaline water (uh...).
The customers and volunteers that work at Cafe 458 were all very friendly and at the end of the day, they prepared a family style meal for us to enjoy. Afterwards, we headed to the Martin Luther King Jr. District to see the crypt, reflecting pool and museum. Our first day was a great introduction to Atlanta, and we can't wait to see what tomorrow will bring when we head back to Cafe 458.
