Houston 2 - Health

Day 1: Tacos, Waterfalls, & Soggy Socks

January 11, 2014

Late night rolling into town had us blowing up air mattresses to crash on faster than a kid opening presents on Christmas. The 14 hour drive from Columbia to Houston was short of car space yet full of potty breaks, sour patch kids, and many tolls throughout Oklahoma. Be wary crossing the border from Oklahoma to Texas, urban cowboy Mikel Knight and gang might lasso you into a 20 minute solicitation you didn’t want; but hey his CD’s are only $10 to hear about the cowboy way!

The church we are staying welcomed us with hospitality and early morning wakeup-calls. We woke up with inflated spirits and deflated mattresses, yet we were anxious to see where the day would take us. First stop: IHOP! With full tummies and lots of coffee, the rain had us shift our plans from heading to the beach to the hotties taking on the town.

Our grocery list for the week took us to Walmart, where Dalton and Emily lead the pack. 5 loaves of bread, 3 gallons of milk, and $180 later this should last us hopefully through the night ;) We got creative (and stingy with money) searching for free attractions to explore. We found ourselves at Gerald D. Hines Waterwall, a 64 ft’ (or story…depending what you google) tall horseshoe shaped water sculpture. As amusing as it was, a few minutes standing in the rain was enough for us to move onto our next venture. This lead us to the Contemporary Art Museum and the Holocaust Museum, that let us in for free because #college.

The Holocaust Museum was an eerie reminder of the hatred our world has seen and inspired us to remember that it doesn’t matter who you serve, as long as your serving with an open mind and open heart.

Next: Torchy’s Tacos and they were “Damn Good”. We knew right away the food must have been good, by how crowded it was at 2 in the afternoon, and by the screaming employee that exiled us to wait outside the door. Lets just say, $4 tacos and a plethora of queso made up for the wait.

The food coma came… and it hit hard. Luckily a group of energetic yet slightly terrifying 6th graders woke us up for a vicious battle of dodge ball. Our record was was 1-3, but only because some nice dads stepped in to help us uncoordinated college kids out.

As our day comes to a close, our thoughts surround beginning our service tomorrow at Bering Omega. We are feeling anxious and ready to jump in wherever needed this week!

Over and out!
