After only our second day of volunteering, life in the Columbia Crew has taken on a routine. My alarm goes off and everyone hears it except me, we all zombie out of bed at 6:30, cereal (or in Nate/Matt's case, mashed potatoes) for breakfast, a second breakfast at Starbucks or McDonalds, and then we get lost on the way to our volunteering site while listening to a soulful rendition of "Do you like drugs/love/hugs". After watching us try and fail, Jazmin takes over the navigation and we arrive at PASOs only sort of late.
It's great to see everyone going above and beyond at PASOs. From 8-2, Kelsie and Megan entertained two adorable Spanish-babbling toddler girls with endless games of "Los Amigos: Jirafa y Perro", about 10 repeats of the "Dos elefantes" song, and multiple air guitar performances. Lance, Nate, Paula, Diana, and Alyssa made super professional-looking laminated wallet-sized cards explaining how to read Fahrenheit and know when your child has a fever. Partners in crime Jazmin and Landon pulled out their design skills to create eye-catching informative flyers about the different programs and workshops PASOs offers. After their time together they have both adopted the phrase, "Turn up" which apparently means "Kicking it", which I thought meant "chilling/relaxing" but really means "partying/gettin wild". I also just learned what twerking is. Apparently Landon has some twerking experience but he has yet to show us what he's got. Evan and Maddie created Sexual Health Two Truths and a Lie and an informational version of that game where you put the card on your forehead. Whatever that's called.
Of course, everyone has gone above and beyond on the clothespin game, which has created a constant sense of paranoia in the group. Diana has proven to be an easy target for her ruthless peers, and for a good part of the day she had five pins hanging off of the back of her jacket.
Some things I have learned so far about a few of our ASBers:
Alyssa bravely tried on "garter pants". Of course she is hot in anything she wears, but the ladies' final judgment was a resounding "NO".
Nate and Landon prefer to sleep "head to toe", when sharing one air mattress.
When Maddie and Nate are hungry, they can jump a chainlink fence like its a baby gate.
Maddie loves the word "smegma".
Jazmin loves movies. She has bought a total of 7 movies since Sunday. Also, her first screen name was JazzieBu2Cute4U.
Looking forward to see what the rest of the week has to offer! Alyssa and I love all of our participants and we can't wait to see what other great things they can do. Hasta manana!
