We spent our first day volunteering at Colorado Children's Hospital. This is one of the top children's hospitals in the world. This hospital relies greatly on volunteers. In 2011, there were 1,920 volunteers amounting to 160, 598 hours of service given. This amounts to $3,430,373 saved by the hospital. Our ASB trip is so happy we could serve the hospital this week! We met many children who have travelled across the country and world to utilize this hospital. Today our group split into three groups. The first group hosted craft activities for children in the waiting room before their appointments. Another group hosted Easter craft activities in the atrium of the hospital available to anyone. The last group worked in the creative play center in which our participants played with the siblings of cancer patients.
We really got a chance to spend time with children today- both patients and their siblings. This really helps their siblings decompress from all of the stress in these situations. Furthermore, we learn from the siblings about what it means to be an active supporter of someone. All of us met families who are experiencing diverse medical conditions and learned this impacts everyone in the families. In addition to the patients themselves who go through treatment, their siblings and parents are there to support them. Despite it all, the siblings and parents are able to keep a positive attitude. This helped our ASB trip truly learn about the power of relationships and the importance of supporting all of those around us. Our group felt a bit tired after our busy morning of orientation and volunteering but we have learned from today that even when you are tired, you can still serve all of those around you.
Our ASB trip also learned the importance of communicating love. Our ASB participants did not know these children before today yet each of us were able to communicate love and respect towards all. For some children, we did not speak the same language. However, we were able to communicate love through smiles and provide all of the craft resources that we could. Regardless of language, it was easy for us to share love and use that to communicate on common ground. Actions are louder than words and our enthusiasm and spirit portrayed our excitement.
After volunteering, we went to Deer Creek Canyon Park and got to see the mountains and experience the snow first-hand. After some photos and wildlife spottings, we were on our way to dinner. Michael's cousin, Michelle, hosted us for a delicious dinner of lasagna and cookies!
After returning home, some of our ASB participants decided to pose in typical spring break clothing outside in the snow. This consists of tanks, shorts, sandals, and boots wit da fur. Our ASB group experienced a very interesting photo shoot to say the least considering there is still snow on the ground. We are looking forward to serving tomorrow!

Some of our participants colored pictures and used them to help thank the hospital.
Jill, Erica, and Allison help set up a craft station in the atrium of the hospital.
The gorgeous mountain scenery we saw today!
