Atlanta - Animals

 Day of Volunteering 2:
(SORRY WE MISSED YESTERDAY! We'll make up for it with an amazingly long blog post!)
To start, all of the Atlanimals are HEROES! While volunteering at the cat shelter in the afternoon, we noticed smoke and a brush fire forming outside of the shelter.  In a matter of seconds, the fire had grown massively! The Atlanimals grabbed pitchers and buckets, filled them with water, and fought (and defeated) the fire!

An amazing day at Furkids! We had the chance to spend time at the FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) House in the morning as well as an afternoon at the Main Cat Shelter.  FIV is very similar to HIV and it was not only an opportunity for service but also a chance to learn more about how FIV should not be treated as a stigma, and that these cats can lead normal lives!
Below are some of the highlights of our Atlanimals from our day of service!
Toad: Puppies! Some sort of Chihuahua mix!
My Dog Skip: My favorite part was doctoring She-Wolf! During the fire-fighting escapade, Shark Bait's heroism in fighting the brush fire results in a water bucket wounding She-Wolf.
Warhorse: My highlight of the day was making out with a dog.  When the puppies came to the cat shelter, they licked my lips! I love the cats but I need some dogs in my life. I also loved scraping cat hair off of the trees!
Dragon: I really enjoy the efficiency of the group and fighting the fire really showed that! To be honest, I missed most of it but I dashed into the action!
Monkey Business: I really enjoyed talking to the staff and volunteers at Furkids. Learning about their experiences, why they work with Furkids, and their background was very interesting.
Kung Fu Handa: I enjoyed talking to the ladies who worked at the FIV house. It was interesting because I could see their passion for these cats. They knew every single cat's names and stories (over 40 cats!).
Fancy Feline: Playing with Muzby after learning that she was a feral cat who had learned to get along with people. I also loved creating a new cat out of hair we collected off of trees!
Shark Bait: I really enjoyed feeling like a hero! I put out the fire right behind the (pictured above) SUV. We actually made a difference in reference to the ASB principle: Poco a Poco. We saved the shelter of over 250 cats!
Arctic Tiger: While in Room 11, while everyone was outside already fighting the fire (no one told me), I was suddenly told to get buckets of water so I ran out with the buckets and the fire was already out. I missed the action but it was memorable nonetheless!
She-Wolf: I really enjoyed seeing Sky and Ty get adopted! Seeing two cat brothers getting adopted together was amazing. Sadly, these cats were adopted in 2004 and were returned back to the shelter in 2013. It was great to see the cats get a happy ending.
Harry Otter: Looking at the magnitude of supplies we bought from Wal-Mart for Furkids! We decided as a group to utilize part of our budget to donate paper towels, Clorox wipes, cleaning spray, cat food, and more! After working at the shelter, we spoke to regular Furkids volunteers to see what supplies they needed.  Being able to see the mark we are able to leave was amazing! Also, I almost learned how to juggle!
Stringray Hai: My favorite part was seeing Harry Otter and I's participants bond! At the FIV house, one of the volunteer coordinators asked us to break into natural groups of people we know we like to work with. I saw that the participants got along very well with everyone and liked to work with all so there were no natural breaks. It was
awkward but amazing!
Thanks everyone and look out for our post tomorrow!
