Atlanta-Homelessness and Poverty

Atlanta, day 3, was AWESOME! The weather was gorgeous, the mood was right, but we had trouble waking up. That problem was quickly fixed with some sweet jams from our cardboard box speakers. Our first group left around 8 to go the Edge and begin their work for the day. The other group started at café 458; first the café 458 group. We walked in to be welcomed by a lady named Alison. She explained our tasks and the type of people we would be working with. There were also regular volunteers with us as well as Kenny, also referred to as Chef Ramsey, owner of Hell's Kitchen. We handled him pretty well, at least Helena did. He was handing out tasks like they were sentences. We tackled them all with intense precision and serve the best kindergarten lunch ever!

The other group, who met us for lunch, informed us that things were pretty slow back at the EDGE. Cole, Stephen, Brett, and Chris had the most productive day digging in trash cans, making mulch, and sorting through shampoo that I'm pretty sure was imported via the Mayflower. Stephen also had to undergo the third degree on what kind of cigs he smoked, drugs he did, and what his meth habits were (just because the guy found out we were from Missouri). We took this opportunity to take a coffee break. One group went to Starbucks and the other tried to go but got lost and ended up back at the coffee shop we stumbled upon last night. This turned out to be a great happenstance of misfortune! We found a park down the street that turned out to be an amazing panorama of scenery around the skyline of the city. It had a lake, field, pool, playground, and was one of the best discoveries we have made thus far on our trip!
After our excursion, we met back up and took on the jumbled, discombobulated mess that was the wardrobe at the EDGE. In a mere two hours, our group was able organize the entire thing by size and type of clothing. We were even offered a cake in return for our services but the lady said we really didn't want a cake she baked.

We then went back to the house for some quick snacks before going on our next excursion, the campus of Georgia Tech. We tore the place up and definitely left our mark. We started in Greek Town, where Laureen visited her fellow AXO's . It was going great until Max started asking questions pertaining to the decorum of the house. We quickly ushered him out and continued on our quest. Once we had checked out the houses we found the stadium, where the football field was wide open to walk onto…so we did.

After we had our fun running around the grass of GT's football field we proceeded to the student commons, where Cole and I spread some "Mizzou cheer and good will" and were also probably judged by the student worker who was staring at us like we had just walked out of a Lady Gaga music video. Then we made our last venture to a residence hall. We were pleased to see that Mizzou's residence halls are MUCH better. We did, however, knock on a guy's door to tell him happy birthday from Mizzou and also tried getting free ice cream from these girls that said they had some and to just knock if we wanted some….but they weren't there, sad day. Yes, our little army of Mizzou students did a great job devouring the Georgia Tech campus. We ended our day with chicken nuggs, mac n cheese, and Capri Suns; we also watched the movie Precious.

Xoxo Deuces from the ATL
