Charleston 2 - Children

Today we completed our first day of service at the Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) in Charleston, SC. The 11 of us were really excited to begin our day by touring the facilities with Brian, who has several different titles and we aren’t really sure what to call his actual position. We spent most of our day learning about the history of the CYDC and the campus we were on. It turns out the Youth Center has actually been around in Charleston since 1790! After our tour of the campus we spent time organizing the storage house filled with donations given to the campus from various organizations and individuals. Except for Kyle. Kyle spent the whole day shredding paper in the administration building.

After the day of service at the CYDC we headed back to the church we are staying at and had the opportunity to interact with the homeless staying in the warming shelter offered there. When the temperatures drop below 35 degrees the church opens their doors to people who may need a hot meal and warm place to stay for the night. We had a lot of fun interacting with them while they ate, and one of them played the piano and sang while Gracie danced (not well, we should add.) It was an awesome experience to get to hang out with them and learn a little bit more about their lives. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings us!
