Service Schedule for Wednesday: GirlStart all day

Today, we volunteered at a Non Governmental Organization named Girlstart. This org offers an afterschool program and a summer camp for girls between 4th and 8th grade. They focus on encouraging girls in Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (#STEM).  As a group, we molded 1,712 fossils out of clay. The fossils were layered by the time periods in which they existed.  The calico scallop came first, then the cat print, the Ammonite, the Dinosaur, the Gastropod, and finally the Brachiopod. Even though we didn’t work directly with the girls at this site, we helped reduce the amount of work necessary to be done by the employees for the spring camp.

As a fun activity, our group decided to go to Austin Panic Room, in which we were locked in a room for an hour and we had to find various clues that will lead us to an item that was stolen but hidden in the museum from the robber’s lack of time to escape. We solved this mystery with 19 minutes to spare. This was an activity that encouraged team building and critical thinking.

Quote of the Day: “Wait, am I too old to do STEM? Do you have college programs?”

THURSDAY BLOG

Service Schedule for Thursday: GirlStart all day

Today was tight. We worked at Girlstart again, but this time, we had a new task. Our assignment was this: fold and assemble STEM work booklets. Next, our assignment was this: fill up Valentine’s-Day-themed baggies with pencils, candy, and various other small goodies to be enjoyed by the girls in the after-school program. After three other days of service, our team worked together very well. We streamlined the process and formed an assembly line that would make Henry Ford himself commit the cardinal sin of pride. Although the work was extremely tedious, we were in a comfortable environment that led to much bonding. Music, conversation, and the sound of industrial staplers filled the air as we learned each other’s deepest secrets and discussed our preferences involving romantic relationships. All together, I would say Thursday the 14th of January was a day for the history books.

Quote of the Day: “Women’s share of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workforce is only 24%, in contrast to their more balanced share among the college-educated workforce (49%).”
